The nature of time
What is time? It might seem an easy question to answer, but it isn’t. Physics has revealed that time is far more complex than our intuition suggests. It flows at a different speed in different places, and there is no way to say what the present is all over the universe; at the fundamental physical level, in a sense, time does not even exist. To understand our experience of time, we must bring in general relativity, thermodynamics, neuroscience and maybe more. Carlo Rovelli reveals why many aspects of this journey are still mysterious.
Carlo Rovelli is an Italian physicist who has spent a lifetime working on the nature of space and time and the foundations of quantum theory. He is one of the founders of the theory of loop quantum gravity. Rovelli has conducted research in Italy, the United States, and currently in France, where he directs the Quantum Gravity Research Group at Aix-Marseille University. He is a member of the Institut Universitaire de France, Honorary Professor of the Normal Beijing University and has received an Honoris Causa degree from the University of San Martin in Buenos Aires. His popular science books include Seven Brief Lesson of Physics which has been translated into more than 40 languages and has sold over a million copies worldwide, and most recently The Order of Time, on the nature of time.
