River Thames Boat Project
66 Hill Street, TW9 1TW Richmond Upon Thames, Surrey, United Kingdom
Thames Venturer is moored at Teddington Lock and becomes your ‘floating classroom’ for the day.
The day begins with all children boarding the boat and having a safety briefing before learning a little of the history of the boat: it’s over 100 years old!
Over the course of the day the children will do the following workshops:
1. Water Survey: measuring the temperature, ph and general health of the water and discussing whether the water is a suitable environment for wildlife to thrive in
2. Rocks and Soils: discussing the meandering nature of the Thames, and why it has such a shape, likewise, where the water comes from and what geology surrounds the river basin. An experiment involves checking how easily water runs through various local geological substances and drawing conclusions on the shape of London’s river from there.
3. Lock and Foreshore: visit Teddington Lock and see how it works and forage for signs of local history and natural history on the river foreshore by the weir (subject to low tide).
