In 2018, Yoga & Mindfulness hit the mainstream in a big way; according to surveys around 14% of the population now practise either Yoga or Meditation. Is this a sign of the times? Google CEO Eric Schmidt said they are creating more information in 2 days than was created from the dawn of civilisation. We are consuming and processing vast amounts of information daily. What effect is this having on our nervous system and memory? How exactly does Yoga help ease these problems?
There is a strong trend in people seeking services/teachers to empower their personal growth and self development. Forward thinkers are questioning the status quo and searching for deeper more ‘real' connections and experiences for personal development and transformation. They want to go on a journey themselves not ‘outsource’ the experience or buy a quick fix.
There is no linear or delineated thread of yoga as an ancient practice to the yoga that is practiced today. Instead, the history shows us an evolving practice that has been shaped and impacted by historical, cultural, geographical, political and economic imperatives, events and people. What is clear, however, is that yoga as a practice for spiritual transcendence and self knowledge has become subsumed into a language of wellness and psychology in modern times. How did Yoga look in ancient times? And how might it look in another 100 years time?
