Baldwin’s Negro+ intro by visual artist Zak Ové
UK 1968
Dir Horace Ové 46min 16mm

In light of the recent film adaptation of James Baldwin’s novel If Beale Street Could Talk, we screen this impassioned and entertaining portrait of the writer as he addresses a community activist group in 1960s London. Accompanied by the comedian and civil rights activist Dick Gregory, Baldwin discusses, among other things, what it means to be black in America, comparing it to the experience of the British black community.

+ The Black Safari + Q&A

Dir Colin Luke
With Yemi Ajibade, Merdelle Jordine, Bloke Modisane and Horace Ové 60min. Video

For years there have been white expeditions to deepest Africa. In this parody of such explorers and documentary films, an African expedition travels along the Liverpool to Leeds canal in search of Britain’s heart. The intrepid explorers examine the quaint customs of the natives, delve into their folklore and record for posterity an exotic but fast-vanishing culture.
