We are very honoured to have the Speaker of Parliament of the Malaysian House of Representatives, Hon. Mohamad Ariff Yusoff, to join us for an evening at the LSE. Hon. Mohamad Ariff is an alumnus of the school and has held various respectable governmental positions in Malaysia.

Hon. Mohamad Ariff became an associate professor of law in 1974 at the University of Malaya, which is Malaysia's oldest and most prestigious university. Subsequently, he served under a few state regulatory bodies, including the Securities Commission (1993-1995), Companies' Commission of Malaysia (2007-2008) and the Malaysian Rating Agency (until 2008).

He then undertook the role of a High Court judge in 2009, where he, as a strong supporter of human rights, ruled against the Home Ministry in 2010 regarding a controversial book ban. He was subsequently elevated to the Court of Appeals and served in it as Justice from 2012 to 2015.

After being appointed as the Speaker of the lower House of Malaysian Parliament in 2018, Hon. Mohamad Ariff has been pushing for reform measures in restoring the parliament's role in a democracy following the Westminster convention.

Hon. Mohamad Ariff will be speaking about institutional reforms in Malaysia following the watershed elections in 2018. There will then be an extensive question and answer session, where the audience will be given the opportunity to clarify his viewpoints and pose questions to him.

We would like to thank the British Malaysian Society, the United Kingdom & Eire Council for Malaysian Students — UKEC, the KPUM: United Kingdom & Eire Malaysian Law Students' Union, and Pelajar & Komuniti UK — Ireland for co-hosting the event. We would also like to show our gratitude to Ambassador Charles Hay, British High Commissioner (desig) to Malaysia, for his strong support in organising this event.

Note: This event is ticketed, and all audience members are required to show their tickets to enter the venue. Light refreshments will also be provided.
